In January 2017, Spence was diagnosed with cancer of the small intestine. The illness resulted in his restaurant’s temporary closure, and what was supposed to be two weeks’ downtime turned into four months.
After enduring 18 months of chemotherapy treatments, a congestive heart failure diagnosis, and starting immunotherapy, Spence is glad to be cancer-free! He attributes the power of community and the prayers of the people to his successful recovery. He’s forever thankful for his pastor, Bishop Michael Jones of Friendly Temple Church, Chris Sanders, Virgil Pierson, Ella Rogers, his sister Artivia, Marcella Good (aka DeeDee),Wilford Lee, Tori Anthony, and Joel Olsteen’s family for offering endless support during his rough season.
